What AI reads about you besides your website
Owners tend to think of AI visibility as a website problem. The website matters — but when an assistant decides whether to name your business, your site is one witness among many, and it's the witness with the most obvious motive. The verdict mostly comes from corroboration.
The witness list
- Maps and business profiles. Your Google Business Profile is often the single most-read document about your business. Category, hours, service area, photos, and the Q&A section all feed answers directly.
- Directories that engines trust. Yelp, BBB, industry-specific directories (Avvo for lawyers, Healthgrades for medical, Houzz for contractors). Not because customers browse them — because engines cross-check them.
- Reviews, in aggregate. Assistants rarely quote a single review, but volume, recency, and rating shape whether you're a safe answer. A 4.8 with two hundred reviews reads as consensus; a 5.0 with four reads as noise.
- Local and trade press. The strongest corroboration there is — an independent editor decided you were worth writing about. This is its own topic, but it belongs on this list because one story outweighs dozens of listings.
- Lists and awards. "Best of the Treasure Valley," chamber memberships, industry rankings. Engines love lists because lists are pre-digested recommendations.
The test the engines run
Across all of it, the engines are asking one question: do the sources agree? Same business name everywhere. Same address, same phone, same story about what you do. Every mismatch — an old address on a directory, two name spellings, a category that says "consultant" where your site says "contractor" — dilutes the confidence an assistant needs before it puts your name in an answer.
This is why we score findability as its own pillar, separate from your website. You can ace your own site and still be invisible because the rest of your record is thin or contradictory. The free check reads both — and tells you which one is holding your number down.
